Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy explains how Chaim Yuir Mafia LLC ("we", "us"), a New Jersey limited liability company, handles information in the Sousveil Android application (package org.sousveil.app) and the website at sousveil.org (together, the "Service"). By using the Service you agree to this policy.
Summary
- Sousveil is a driver-awareness tool. It uses your device location to show which police jurisdictions operate where you are, to route you, and to power a crowd map.
- You can use the app without creating an account. There is no sign-in and we never ask for your name, email or phone number.
- Your trips, settings and any photos you attach are stored on your device and are not uploaded unless you choose to share them.
- The app contains no analytics, crash-reporting or advertising SDK. We do not sell your personal information and do not use it for advertising.
- Some features send data to third-party providers (maps, geocoding, weather, traffic, an AI assistant) and to our crowd-report backend, as described below.
Information we process
| Data | Why | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| Precise location (GPS), including in the background while live tracking is on | Detect the police jurisdiction(s) you are in, show your position, read the road and speed limit you are on, route you, and place your reports on the map | Stays on device for tracking and jurisdiction detection; sent to map, geocoding, routing, road-data and what3words providers to render maps, addresses and routes; attached to a crowd report only if you submit one |
| Crowd reports you submit — report type, coordinates, direction of travel, timestamp, your optional note, and a random reporter ID | Warn other drivers about police sightings, hazards and speed traps | Stored in our crowd backend (Google Cloud Firestore) and shown to other users of the app |
| Radar-detector alerts you choose to share — band, signal strength, direction, frequency, coordinates, timestamp, the same random reporter ID | Build the shared radar map | Same crowd backend; only sent when you turn sharing on |
| Trips (route, timestamps, speeds, reports you logged, photos you attach) | Trip history and playback | Stored on your device. Leaves the device only if you share or export a trip yourself |
| Destination searches you type | Address autocomplete and routing | Sent to Google Maps Platform with a session identifier |
| Text you send to the in-app AI assistant | Turn a sentence you write into structured report fields | Sent to Google (Gemini) or Anthropic (Claude), whichever the build is configured for |
| Radar-detector data read over Bluetooth, if you pair a detector | Show radar alerts while driving | Processed on device; shared only if you turn on radar sharing |
| Settings, and a random reporter ID | Remember your preferences; let the backend group your own reports without identifying you | On device. The reporter ID is a random value generated on first use, is not derived from your device or account, and accompanies reports you submit |
| Network and Wi-Fi state | Decide when it is safe to fetch data or download maps | On device |
The app requests Bluetooth permissions solely to connect to a radar detector, and asks Android not to derive location from Bluetooth scanning. Notification permission is used to show driving alerts and the tracking notification. The app has no camera or microphone permission and does not record audio or video.
Where your data goes
Our backend
Google Cloud Firestore stores crowd reports and shared radar alerts and serves them to other drivers. Anything you submit there is visible to other users of the app.
Feature providers
Depending on the features you use, the app sends the minimum data needed to these providers, each under its own privacy policy. Unless stated otherwise they receive a location or an area query, not your identity:
- Google Maps Platform — map display, address autocomplete (receives what you type), geocoding, directions, and the static map image used when you share a trip.
- OpenStreetMap — map tiles, and the Overpass API for the road you are on, its speed limit, and mile markers.
- what3words — converts your coordinates to a three-word address, only when you open "Where you are".
- OpenWeather — weather-radar map tiles.
- Google (Gemini) and Anthropic (Claude) — receive the text you type into the AI assistant.
- Public traffic and incident feeds — state services such as Ohio OHGO, Georgia 511 and Caltrans QuickMap, and the USDOT work-zone data feed.
- airplanes.live — public ADS-B aircraft positions for the area shown on your map.
Plugins you install
If you install a companion plugin app, Sousveil sends it your coordinates and a search radius over on-device messaging so it can return alerts. The plugin is a separate app under its own developer's control and privacy policy, and whatever it does with those coordinates, including sending them to its own server, is outside our control. Uninstalling the plugin stops this.
Map servers you choose
If you set your own tile server for offline maps, the app requests tiles from the address you entered, and that server sees which areas you download and when. Downloaded tiles are cached on your device.
We do not control and are not responsible for third parties' own data practices.
Background location
When you turn on live tracking, Sousveil accesses your location in the background so it can keep telling you which agency patrols the road you are on and warn you of nearby reports while the app is not in the foreground. A persistent notification is shown the whole time tracking is active. Background location is used only for these driver-awareness features, is never used for advertising, and stops when you stop tracking.
What we do not do
- We do not sell or rent personal information.
- The app contains no advertising, analytics or crash-reporting SDK, and no third-party tracker.
- We do not use your data for advertising or ad profiling.
- We do not require your name, email, or a login to use the app.
- We do not record audio or video, and the app holds no camera or microphone permission.
- We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13, and the app is not directed to children.
Optional permissions
- Battery optimisation exemption: optional, and asked for only so Android does not stop location updates in the middle of a drive.
- Device administrator: optional. If you enable it, its only effect is to show a reminder to back up before the app is uninstalled, because your trips and settings live only on the device. It enforces no device policies, cannot see other apps, and can be turned off in Android settings at any time.
Retention
Trips, photos and settings remain on your device until you delete them or uninstall the app. Crowd reports and shared radar alerts are retained on the backend for up to 90 days and may be aggregated into anonymous, non-identifying map data that persists longer.
Your choices and rights
- Location: you can grant, limit to foreground-only, or revoke location access in Android settings; features degrade gracefully.
- Incognito drive: track without saving the trip.
- Sharing is opt-in: reports and radar alerts are only sent when you choose to send them.
- Export: you can export your trips and settings to a file from Settings, and share or keep it yourself.
- Access and deletion: to request deletion of crowd reports associated with your reporter ID, contact us at chaimyuir@chaimyuirmafia.com. Depending on your region (for example GDPR/UK GDPR, CCPA/CPRA) you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or restrict processing of your personal data; we honour applicable requests.
- Uninstalling the app removes all locally stored data, including trips, photos, settings and your reporter ID.
Security
Data in transit is protected with HTTPS/TLS. Trips, photos and settings are kept in the app's private storage on your device. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect information.
International users
The Service and its providers may process data in the United States and other countries. By using the Service you consent to processing in these locations, subject to applicable law.
Accountability records on the website
The website publishes body-camera legal information and accountability records about law-enforcement agencies, drawn from public court filings, government sources, and reporting, each shown with its source. This is public-interest information about organisations, not personal data we collect from you.
Changes
We may update this policy; material changes will be posted here with a new effective date.
